Independent film poster research 16/11/12

As I have managed to research several of film posters in which are distributed by well known companies I then realise that since my short film is considered to be an independent film, by receiving the knowledge of how other well-known independent film produce their film poster would be a better solution. This will provide an understanding what specific graphical devices I would use to present my film that as an audience would influence me to watch the film.

INK

Use of black and white colours which empathizes a more gothic feature of their film. The uses of black in which is used as a color font for the word ‘Ink’ looks as though it has been handwritten with ink. A more grey and cloudy effect of presenting four figures on top of the poster with additional effect of showing a light appearing from their eyes suggesting them as spy’s or someone who are a mysterious group in the film.

The main features and objects in the film are usually represented graphically ,objects such as four figures on top of the poster seems as though they are mysterious spies and also a bizarre looking figure holding a young child presenting as a black colour font suggest the film to be horrific and curious for the audience reaction. Therefore this wouldn’t consider too much of a foreknowledge for an audience to recognize however they will suggest the four figures as spies alongside with the two upfront figures where one may be very deviant and a monster looking and the other of course presented as an innocent child who is being taken away.

The poster also presents evident quotes from specific extract which views their personal side of the film.” Epic in nature …it’s a film that can stop your heart both with its story and with its look”. This evident quote suggests their opinion to present how this is referred to be their recommendable film to be watched. By including a strong expression of how the film will effect their emotions is a beneficial way to allow audiences to receive an high expectations of the film cinematography and plot. Therefore by using this device is considered to be a persuasive technique used by the poster in which boosts up the attention that will be gained from the audience to feel surprised and excited to watch the film.

I believe that by viewing this poster, this is more intended to audiences who prefer thriller and horror movies. Due to the gothic graphical presentation of the poster it is more preferable to belong to a category where there will be a lot of gore and horrific scenes.

The unique selling point in this poster presents the name production of the film which is ‘a jamin Winans film’. This suggests how the poster is trying to present the project developer of the film to at least endorse its film producer to receive high reputation and credit of what they have produced. Another unique selling point also includes the person who quoted their personal response of the film named ‘Cole abalus’. Referring to the evident quote as explained previously, this helps to at least endorse the film to send strong feedback to intended audience to know what they will expect when they will watch the film.

Production Constraints

How much does the poster tell you about the institutional context of the movie's production?

By viewing the poster, we can identify how it includes the producer of the film which is developed by a ‘jamin winans film’ which allows the audience to recognize the producer of film as well as allowing them to give their satisfied response to them of their creativity and cinematography.

Another institutional context is where the poster presents the quotes from specific extracts of the company which views their personal opinion about the film. This allows them to actually present the audience how this may referred to be a recommendable film to be watched.

In my opinion, marketing a film through presentation of posters and advertisement is the most compulsory needs to build up a films reputation to be watched and also allows the developers to exceed their high reputation so many audiences will consider to watch all their developing films.

By viewing the poster, seems very basic since it’s not a well-known developing company however they have managed to at least include specific quotes that will gain their notice from the audiences.

In my opinion, I believe that producing the poster doesn’t consider to be very expensive. By comparing with many popular film posters, this poster seems very basic and only includes one developing company which of course in other popular films they include many well-known distribution companies such as warner bros, lionsgate ect.

Critical Evaluation

In conclusion I believe the poster is very creative in the terms of presenting the film as a horror/thriller type of a film. However the poster seems very basic as it does not include many distribution companies and the creative teams that actually supported the film, mostly known as a low budget independent film. Most importantly, I believe by following in their genre term manages to accomplish of presenting a more gothic and spooky image for the audience to recognize it as a horror film that will eventually come across with many twists and surprising moments.

The reason why I have chosen to analyse this poster is because, the devices used such as presenting a horror image of the poster actually attracts me to produce my own film poster something very similar. The use of black font that convers up all the figures on the image presents a more mysterious look of the film in which I will eventually will present on my own film poster.

Primer

The use of grey in which its brightness increases in the middle of the frame alongside with a dirty scrubbed feature on the flooring presents a more rough presentation of the poster. Use of bitch black background presenting an emptier atmosphere which then feels as though it’s a more horrific look of a film. Overall the use of the colors which is presented in this poster seems very dirty and a scruffy.

The main objects and background of the poster are represented as graphically, Such as the use of the use of wire text that is used to present the name of the film ‘Pimer’.The word ‘primer’ is defined as A cap or tube containing a small amount of explosive used to detonate the main explosive charge of a firearm or mine. Therefore by viewing the object used in the poster which is presented as very brown scruffy item may consider to be an explosive charge which is plugged into many electrical supplies.Futhermore explains how the film may present many scenario cases that may occur such as a plan for a terrorist attack. In my opinion by first viewing this poster is likely be referred to a action based film or even a horror/thriller film because of the dark and gloomy features of the film poster

Messages used such as ‘what happen if it actually works?’ is a rhetorical device in which the word ‘it’ can be referred to an object or an item. This suggests how the film is referred to the audience may be involved to a scene where they have to expect something that will work in which will make a massive change or a miracle in the film.

Another message used such as a personal quote “The headiest most singular science fiction movie since kubrick made 2001”.This already suggest how the film is science fiction and also a recommendable film. The quote also includes a famous writer named ‘Kubrick’ in which many people are familiar with his well known films therefore this increases the promotion of the film poster.

By viewing the poster I believe that this belongs to an audience who are considered to be interested in science fiction films, because of the message which represents the film as the ‘headiest’ science fiction and also understanding the definition of the films name. However to include such a more dark and scruffy atmosphere may suggest how the film can refer to be a horror/thriller type of a film.

Production Constraints

By viewing the poster, it has managed to present the distribution company of the film and also includes all the developing teams that have support the film production at the bottom of the image. This will at least present to the audience how this film have been produced very accurately and took such a long term with a large masses of the production and distribution teams to develop the film in its higher standards.Futhermore, using a well-known production company such as ‘think film’ will allow audiences to recognize the developers of the film and to clarify how the film may be their interested company of producing films.

In my opinion, marketing a film through presentation of posters and advertisement is the most compulsory needs to build up a films reputation to be watched and also allows the developers to exceed their high reputation, so many audiences will consider to watch all their developing films.

In my opinion by viewing the poster does seem very professional on how they endorse their film such as including specific quotes from extracts including a famous directors name ‘Stanley kubrick’ of course suggest how the film is considered to be a top independent film even though Stanley kubrick is one of the most famous of directors. It does consider to be a beneficial way to upgrade your advertisement to appeal audiences to actually know that this is a recommendable film to be watched. Therefore I believe it may become an expensive option of including several distributor companies by permission and also the name of ‘Stanley Kubrick’.

In conclusion, I believe that the poster seems very creative in the terms of presenting a sci-fi cinematography of the poster however a more mysterious and thoughtful way of including a rhetorical device. I believe that this device will allow me to realize how I can include a rhetorical device on my poster, which allows the audience to realize how there might be a big twist or an expecting moment. Overall to clarify my decision of choosing this poster as my research option is because the color font and the rhetorical device used seem very appealing in which I believe I can use the same device in my film poster and also how I learnt that most well-known poster should include a specific quote including a famous director or a famous celebrity. This will suggest how the film seems very popular and also encourages audiences to know how the film have been watched by famous people. Finally including the distributed companies that supported the film production is a compulsory need to endorse the credit to the other companies that supported the films production.
